Having lived in London for a few years now, I can definitely tell you that I’ve lived in some very, very small spaces. I’ve had my whole life in one room. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t make it feel like home. Not everyone has the luxury of living in a big mansion, especially if you’re a city girl like me! But, if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s how to make the most out of a space and make it my own. So, if you’re living in a small-ish apartment right now, or even in one room like I was, then here are some tips to give you a little breathing space:
Declutter your life
First things first, you don’t want to be owning loads and loads of stuff! Trust me, I love little trinkets and home accessories more than anyone. But I’ve collected so much stuff and begun a bit of a collection that it makes a smaller space look cluttered. And that’s what you want to avoid. You want clear surfaces as much as possible and only show off your home accessories in desired spots. This will give the room an appearance of looking bigger and will help you remain organized!
Use storage wisely
You don’t need really big bulky furniture taking up your valuable space. So you need to learn how to use your space and your storage wisely. And the walls offer a great bit of space for you to do this. Have as many shelves as possible – that will get your personal possessions off of the ground and off of furniture that may take up more room. Because with smaller spaces you don’t want or need a lot of furniture – it’s only with bigger spaces that you need it to fill the space. Having shelves will also give you the chance to put some personal touches on your room and actually allow you to decorate a little bit!
Use colors wisely
You want to bring as much light into the room as possible. So, if you’re apartment/room is already quite dark and doesn’t get much natural light then you need to create this light yourself. You can do this with well-positioned mirrors that bounce and reflect the light, making your space feel bigger. You can also keep it very simple with your colors, I would recommend using white for smaller spaces because it will bounce the light and create the illusion of a bigger space. Plus, it will help keep you refreshed and not so boxed in!
Break up the room
When I was living in one room, it was really important that I segregated the space. Whilst there may have actually not been separate rooms to escape to, it made me feel like there was! And you can add a sense of style to your home by doing this. Splitting off the spaces is easy and you can even do it with furniture – that way you feel like you have a space to escape to as well!
Most of all, make it cozy
By making anything feel warm and cozy you will be making your small space perfect. Adding warm, cozy elements will really transform the space. To others, it won’t just be a small apartment/room but a small, cozy piece of heaven you want to spend all your time in. Trust me when I tell you that this really helps and will really make you feel at home.
