How To Be The Editor Of Your Own Life

Wondering how to live a better life? Well, it all depends on your definition of better.

Most of us want to be a version of ourselves that’s just slightly upgraded. The version who’s more productive, works out, and has every area of her life balanced.

It’s not going to happen overnight unless you make it happen. The best way to do that is to edit.

And edit as you go along.

What can you cut out from your life in order to make it better? What can you add in?

There are a few things you can do right now that will make a huge difference to your quality of life.

So let’s get started, shall we?

 

Step 1

Plan your best life

 

In order to edit your life, you need a plan. Much like when an editor is planning content, you’ll need to plan what you want to add to your life.

Which things will bring you joy? Have you always wanted to work out more? Want to try a vegan diet? Take these things off your wish list, and put them on your want list.

You don’t wish you could work out more, you want to work out more. Now it’s about how badly you want it. To start with, gather images of the kind of life you’d like to curate.

You can never go wrong with a vision board. Start simple and choose images that inspire you.

Then group them together into action points. If you’ve chosen an image of a house, do you want to buy your own house? Or just decorate your space to better reflect your life.

Each image should have an action point attached to it, which you’ll then turn into a time frame.

 

Step 2

Prepare for big changes

 

Preparing for change means making small steps towards the life you want to lead. Whether that’s deciding which day of the week you’ll be working out on and sticking to it, or buying yourself a planner that will help you get on top.

In order to edit your life properly, you’ll benefit from a copy of the Getting Things Done planner.

Not only has it got the space for all your daily tasks, it’ll help you live a better life by keeping you on track of your self-care rituals.

Every day you can write in the amount of water you’ve had, which exercise you’re planning to do, meal prep and more.

Meaning that if one of your goals is to live a smoother, more organized life, you’ll absolutely smash it.

 

Step 3

Curate the things you need

 

Now you need to bring in the things you need to live a better life. That means doing some research to see what you need to actually make it happen.

Buy your workout gear, download those podcasts and sign up to those newsletters. What do you need to become a better version of yourself and feel balanced and productive?

Curating is fun, it means you can buy new things. Maybe you need to start dressing for the job you want, or maybe you need new workout equipment.

Don’t forget, though, with every new thing you ‘curate’ into your life, you’re going to need to do some cutting, too.

 

Step 4

Cut out things that hold you back

 

What do you need to cut to live a better life?

This is by far the hardest step. Going through the things you’ve already amassed and deciding whether they’re worth keeping is an important step towards change.

Likewise, you might want to think about habits and behaviors that aren’t helping you move forward, too.

To start with read books like The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck and The Happiness Project. These instructional books will inspire you to take action in your life and live smarter.

Not only do you need to cut things from your life, you may need to cut toxic people and bad habits. So be prepared for this step, and go at it with determination!

 

Step 5

Keep track of your progress

 

You can’t expect to perform if you don’t analyze your progress.

Keep those action points from your vision board, and the timeline you created. You can look into them and see if you’re approaching your deadline properly.

Keep track of your progress in a planner, because writing down goals makes them more real and easier to stick to.

After one month look back on your progress, did you stick to your mini-deadlines? Was there anything you struggled with or could improve on.

It’s important never to give up or to get held back by the times you might not progress as well as you want to. Every mistake is a learning process.
