The Best Essential Oils for Anxiety + How to Use Them

Most of us have experienced anxiety at one time or another. A job interview, a big exam, or another stressful event are all circumstances that can throw us into an unwanted state of anxiety.

Additionally, depending on your personality, you may be more prone to get anxious more than other people. But regardless of the cause of your anxiety, it doesn’t change the fact that it can really be a nuisance.

Some symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Accelerated heartbeat
  • Rapid breathing
  • Insomnia
  • Obsessive Thoughts
  • Feeling worried
  • Feeling Nervous
  • Sweating

While there are many things you can do to help combat feelings of anxiousness, one of the simplest things you can do is use anti-anxiety essential oils. They are a surprisingly effective and natural way to help deal with those pesky symptoms.

There are several essential oils that are beneficial in dealing with anxiety. However, today I’m only going to be discussing nine of them. My goal today is to present you with a variety of oils that are easy to find and for the most part, reasonably affordable. Feel free to try whichever ones you like. You can use just one or even all nine. The choice is yours.

9 Essential Oils for Anxiety

1. Lavender

Honestly, is there anything that lavender isn’t good for? As one of the most versatile essential oils, lavender is always one of the first ones I reach for. Not only is it great for anxiety, but it’s also is known for enhancing the benefits of other essential oils as well. Its relaxing scent is a favorite among many and it’s safe enough to use even on babies. Lavender is especially nice to use in homemade roll-on perfumes or in a linen spray.

2. Bergamot

Bergamot has a delightful scent that can be described as citrusy and fruity. Its aroma doesn’t have the sharp bite that lemon or lime do, but it is a bit more tangy than orange. It is especially calming and relaxing and one of my personal favorites. Please note that bergamot is phototoxic, so if used topically, it should be used in low percentages. I especially like to use bergamot in a stick inhaler so I can enjoy its lovely, relaxing scent all day long.

3. Chamomile

Chamomile has long been used as a natural remedy for anxiety. It has a lovely sweet, fruity scent that is extremely calming. It’s important to note that it is considered a sedative, so be sure to use it in small amounts unless you’re using it right before bed. Because it is a pricier oil, I like to use chamomile in blends with other oils and apply it topically.

4. Vetiver

Vetiver is a grounding oil, often anchoring essential oil blends with its deep, earthy scent. It’s very relaxing and is often used to promote sleep. Diffuse vetiver with other essential oils to best utilize its grounding and relaxing benefits.

5. Sweet Orange

With its deliciously fruity scent, sweet orange is a wonderful choice to help with anxiety. It’s a great addition to essential oil blends, as it helps round out the scent and adds a sweet note to the overall scent. Sweet orange is not phototoxic, meaning it can be used safely in topical applications. Diffuse sweet orange or use it in a room spray to enjoy its anti-anxiety benefits.

6. Ylang Ylang

Ylang ylang is a very relaxing and balancing essential oil. It has a uniquely exotic scent that is often considered strong, floral, and sweet. However, a little goes a LONG way with Ylang Ylang, so to keep it from overpowering, use only a drop or two. When used in moderation, it adds a delightful component to blends. Use Ylang Ylang in a homemade perfume blend to enjoy its exotic scent and calming properties all day long.

7. Cedarwood

Surprisingly, cedarwood is a great essential oil for anxiety. Just as its name suggests, it has a very woody aroma. However, when mixed with other essential oils, it adds nice depth that results in a very pleasant scent. It is considered very calming and is also used as a sedative. Because of this, use it in low dilutions or right before bed. I especially like to diffuse cedarwood at night.

8. Geranium

Geranium is another essential oil that is great for anxiety. It has a deep floral aroma that is calming and relaxing for both the mind and the body. While pleasant, its aroma is fairly strong, so using it in smaller amounts in blends is recommended. Diffuse geranium or use it in a homemade perfume.

9. Patchouli

Patchouli is an interesting essential oil in that people either love it or hate it. It has an earthy, woody scent that is unmistakable. Personally, I have found that with repeated exposure to its unique aroma, I have developed a deep appreciation for patchouli. It is a very calming, grounding oil that is very relaxing to the mind and is even used as a light sedative. It anchors blends and adds depth that is hard to beat. Use patchouli in homemade perfumes or diffuse at night to enjoy its calming properties before you go to bed.

Here’s one of my favorite recipes for a relaxing blend that is great for anxiety. Not only is this blend beneficial for dealing with anxiety, but it smells wonderful, as well! You may just find yourself wearing this as a daily perfume!

Essential Oil Anxiety Blend

  • 30 drops lavender
  • 17 drops sweet orange
  • 15 drops cedarwood
  • 15 drops vetiver
  • 7 drops chamomile
  • 3 drops bergamot
  • 3 drops ylang ylang


Diffuse: Add 5-10 drops to your diffuser (depending on manufacturer’s suggestions) and diffuse intermittently as needed.

Mix all essential oils in a 5 ml bottle. Shake to thoroughly combine.

How To Use

Perfume: Add 10-15 drops to a 10 ml roller ball and fill the rest of the way with your favorite carrier oil. Apply to your wrists, neck, temples, and/or behind the ears.

Massage oil: Add 5-6 drops to 1 teaspoon carrier oil and use to massage the head, neck, shoulders, or feet.

Inhaler: Place 1-2 drops on a cotton ball, strip of paper, or a stick inhaler. Place under your nose and inhale as needed.

Bath: Mix 10-15 drops with 2 teaspoons milk or fractionated coconut oil and add to a warm bath. Soak for half an hour.
