Prone to Redness? Try This Anti-Inflammatory Moisturizer


When skin is described as sensitive, it’s typically the first and foremost quality that needs to be addressed. Sensitivity can derail the best of intentions when you are trying to address acne, aging, pigmentation, oil production, etc. No treatment can work effectively until the sensitivity of the skin is given the attention needed. That’s not to say that sensitive skin is something that can be cured; some battle with this reaction their whole life. But it is possible to alleviate and potentially improve the effects of sensitive skin.

How do you know if you have sensitive skin? Generally you will notice one or more of the following symptoms:

  • flushes easily when encountering heat or steam
  • dry patches
  • itchiness
  • burning, stinging after product application
  • prone to rashes or bumps
  • redness

All too often moisturizers leave sensitive skin red, itchy or blotchy. And oh boy, there’s nothing worse than feeling like your face is on fire! Finding a moisturizer that works is a lot of trial and error, which can be expensive and exhausting.

But finding a face moisturizer that works is important. Maybe the most important thing you can do to calm sensitive skin. Without a strong protective moisture layer, skin gets dry and more susceptible to irritation and inflammation.

For sensitive skin, you want to avoid common inflammation triggers. These would include fragrances, sulfates, parabens, ingredients derived from petroleum, alcohol, or dyes. If you find any of your products contain these common allergens, it might be best to slowly replace them with more sensitive-friendly products.

This simple DIY moisturizer is formulated for sensitive skin. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties and sea buckthorn oil and shea butter are packed with hydration-boosting fatty acids.

Instructions

  1. First, place the shea butter in a heat safe glass or jar inside a pan with water, or inside a double boiler. Melt the shea butter and then turn heat off.
  2. Slowly pour in the jojoba oil and sea buckthorn oil and mix. Allow to cool 5-10 minutes and then add the chamomile drops, mix again.
  3. You can allow it to slowly harden if your kitchen is cool enough, or you can place in the fridge. It should stay solid even when you remove from fridge, the only exception I have found is if this made in the hot summer months and it doesn’t quite solidify well the initial time it is made. If that is the case, feel free to keep it in the fridge to keep it solid.
  4. Always apply moisturizers to clean skin both day and night.
